Workshop Description: The skill of close observation of mother-infant interactions has proven to be valuable in training, assessment and treatment of mother-infant dyads at risk for relationship and mental health difficulties. Increasing knowledge of infant development and observational skills deepens understanding needed in making informed, sensitive and effective assessments and interventions as well as in developing new techniques in parent-infant work.
Training in infant observation can be helpful to nurses, doulas, midwives, day care providers, preschool teachers, occupational therapists, social workers, ACS workers, early intervention specialists and other community based workers who provide care and services to mothers, infants, and children up to 3 years of age.
The Anni Bergman Parent-Infant Program has been teaching infant observation for over twenty years modeled on the ideas of Esther Bick at the Tavistock Clinic in London and the work of Margaret Mahler and Anni Bergman in New York. Based on these pioneers’ observations, advances have been made in the theory of the psychological birth and development of self and parent-infant relationship from infancy through early childhood.
This workshop offers an introduction to infant observation through the use of video material and participants’ observations and responses to the material.
Presenter Bios:
Rita Reiswig, MS is a child and adult psychoanalyst and a mother-infant psychotherapist. She is a Founder and Co-director of the Anni Bergman Parent-Infant Program of The Contemporary Freudian Society and The Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. She is a Training Analyst at CFS and faculty member and supervisor of the child analytic training program. She has taught infant observation since 1997 to the ABPIP and, via web conferencing, to mental health professionals in China. She maintains a private practice in New York City.
Sally Moskowitz, Ph.D. has been a Co-Director of the Anni Bergman Parent-Infant Training Program since 2006. She is a Training Analyst and faculty member and supervisor in IPTAR’s Adult Program in Psychoanalysis. She has written on the observation of a single, gay father and his daughter, published in the Journal of Infant Observation and in Frances Salo Thompson’s Infant Observation: Creating Transformative Relationships, and on early bodily based defenses and phantasy published in the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association. She has taught infant observation in the ABPIP and at IPTAR.
Both Rita Reiswig and Sally Moskowitz have participated in a primary prevention project since 2001 and published papers about that work in The Mothers, Infants and Young Children of September 11, 2001. They have consulted to community based family centers and day care programs, working with staff and facilitating mother-infant groups. Currently, they co-direct a Home-Visiting Project working with mothers and infants living in homeless shelters and with children under 3 who are in foster care.
